Drama and trauma 2001

The art world has had its own share of drama and trauma during 2001. Of course, looming over all that took place is the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center (see article, September 11: European Thoughts, September 2001). New York City has changed the way we think in a new century — so rudely christened into barbarism — profoundly. But a number of significant occurrences developed in the second half of the first year of this millennium to jog previously sanctioned assumptions. These were quite apart from the case against leading salesrooms in New York, accused of cartel and price-fixing arrangements.
